The Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Rona Ambrose, issued the following statement to mark Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival: “This evening, Canadians of Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese descent will come together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival. “This tradition is believed to have been first celebrated as early as the 10th century BCE. It was associated with fertility and rejuvenation, and prayers were given for a successful harvest. “Today, this holiday is known for the gathering of family and friends. Under this evening’s full moon, Children will light lanterns while families gather to share stories and enjoy traditional food like mooncakes. “I encourage Canadians to learn more about this important holiday and join in on the many festivities and celebrations planned in their communities this evening and throughout the month. “On behalf of the Conservative caucus, I offer my best wishes to all those celebrating a Happy Moon Festival!”
