OTTAWA –The Conservative Party’s interim leader and Official Opposition leader, Rona Ambrose, released the following statement today about the recent elections in Myanmar: “My Conservative Caucus and I wish to extend to the people of Myanmar our congratulations for their historic and peaceful elections, and congratulate Aung San Suu Kyi on her party’s election – someone we are proud to call an honorary Canadian citizen. “Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable John Baird, and the Hononourable Deepak Obhrai both visited Myanmar to advance prosperity and democracy. In February of 2013, the Hon. Deepak Obhrai led a Parliamentary Delegation to Myanmar as well as represented Canada as an international election observer to monitor Burma’s by-election in March of 2012. “While we congratulate the Burmese people on these historic elections, we note that the military still controls 25% of the seats in Parliament, and continue to be concerned for disenfranchised religious and ethnic minorities including Rohingya Muslims. These elections are an important step towards full participatory democracy. “The Conservative Official Opposition is proud of the support that Canada has provided to democracy in Myanmar, and will continue to be steadfast friends of the Burmese people and their democracy.”
