Liberals Mislead Canadians on Cost of Used Jets: Conservatives
February 27, 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, and Richard Martel, Associate Shadow Minister for National Defence, issued the following statement regarding the release of the Parliamentary Budget Officer’s report on Canada’s purchase of used Australian fighter jets:
“Today, Canadians learned that Justin Trudeau’s government will spend $1.09 billion on used jets for the Royal Canadian Air Force. This is almost $200 million more than what the Liberals previously claimed the purchase of these old fighter jets would cost.
“It is shameful that the Liberals are not only purchasing used fighter jets for our men and women in uniform, but they tried to cover up the true cost for taxpayers. The Liberal tradition of buying old used equipment for the Canadian Armed Forces for political gain must stop.
“The bottom line is that Justin Trudeau has failed to properly equip our Armed Forces. The Royal Canadian Air Force requires new fighter jets to protect Canada and to support our allies. Trudeau’s bad decision to buy used jets further delays the delivery of new fighter jets for the Canadian Armed Forces and is yet another example of Trudeau making Canadians pay for his mistakes.
“Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives believe that the men and women in uniform should have the resources to meet the needs of the Canadian Armed Forces. Justin Trudeau must immediately launch an open and transparent competition to replace Canada’s aging CF-18 fighter jets.”
