OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued a statement following Justin Trudeau’s failure to present a plan to bring returning ISIS terrorists to justice:

“Today, the Prime Minister had the opportunity to follow through on his word and present a real plan to immediately bring ISIS terrorists to justice. Instead, he’s waving the white flag. Today’s report is a meaningless list of empty platitudes and excuses for Liberal inaction on this file.

“Canada’s Conservatives believe that any individual who took up arms against Canada and our allies by joining terrorist groups like ISIS should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and held accountable for their horrific actions. It is clear from today’s report that Justin Trudeau is still focused on reintegration of ISIS terrorists over prosecution.

“The Prime Minister voted in favor of a Conservative motion to bring ISIS terrorists to justice, and it now time for him to get serious and take action on this issue. Conservatives continue to call on Justin Trudeau to implement the following measures:

  • Stop Bill C-59, which makes it harder to bring terrorists to justice.
  • Focus resources on arresting returning ISIS terrorists instead of misguided attempts at reintegration programs, like poetry lessons.
  • Use existing tools to restrict the movement of known terrorists, such as peace bonds.
  • Ensure surveillance of returning ISIS terrorists.
  • Reform international bodies which are failing to bring ISIS terrorists to justice.

“Justin Trudeau’s leadership on this file is shameful and his lack of action should be concerning to all Canadians. The only way that the genocide against the Yazidi’s will truly end is when every ISIS members is brought to Justice. Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives will continue to hold the Prime Minister accountable and call on him to bring forward a real plan to bring ISIS terrorists to justice.”
