**Ottawa, ON** – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement calling on Justin Trudeau to take immediate action to manage Canada’s borders and immigration system: “Canadians expect our immigration system to operate in an orderly, planned, and safe manner. “Despite repeated calls from Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives to come up with a plan, Justin Trudeau has failed to take the appropriate action to manage illegal border crossings in Canada since his irresponsible tweet last year. “It is projected that upwards of 400 people per day will illegally cross into Quebec this summer and instead of looking at real solutions like closing the loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement, or designating the entire Canadian border as an official point of entry, the Trudeau government has spent millions of taxpayer dollars on band-aid solutions. If Justin Trudeau had a plan to address the illegal border crossers, that money could have been put into health care or veterans services. “It is unacceptable to millions of Canadians who came here legally and played by the rules, that the Prime Minister would encourage individuals to illegally enter our country. It’s also unfair to those families who are sponsoring loved ones through the family reunification program that their family members need to wait longer to come to Canada because Justin Trudeau is prioritizing illegal border crossers. “Since being elected, the Trudeau government has accumulated a deportation backlog of criminals in Canada, failed to provide the necessary resources to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, and refused to raise the subject of the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States. “Canada’s Conservatives are calling on Justin Trudeau to take immediate action and table a plan to manage our borders and immigration system no later than May 11th.” -30- For more information: Office of Michelle Rempel Phone: 613-992-4275 [email protected]
