Ottawa, ON – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement to mark Nowruz:

“I am delighted today to extend my best wishes to all those across Canada and around the world celebrating Nowruz.

“Many Canadians – including those from Persian, Kurdish, Ismaili, and Central Asian communities – will be gathered across the country today to reflect on the year passed and to welcome the new spring season. Families and friends will carry forward the spring tradition of gathering around a Haft Seen, which represents hope for the future, and will share in traditional foods while enjoying cultural music.

“With Nowruz celebrations comes the promise of rejuvenation; of new beginnings and renewed optimism for the year ahead. This is a time to make peace with family and friends, put our disagreements behind and make a fresh start. These centuries-old festivities grant observers the opportunity to appreciate life’s many gifts and remind us to use our blessings to serve and help others.

“We remember today those abroad who are suffering from human rights abuses and are denied basic freedoms. Canada’s Conservatives will always stand against all forms of oppression and threats to democracy and the rule of law.

“All Canadians can reflect today on the vibrancy and richness of the Persian and Central Asian cultures and the significant contributions that these communities have made to the development and betterment of our country.

“On behalf of the Canada’s Conservatives, Nowruz Mubarak!”
