Happy National Flag Day!
February 15, 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement to mark National Flag Day:
“For generations, the maple leaf has been one of our most recognizable and treasured symbols of our nation.
“Since almost immediately after Confederation in 1867, our national flag has always featured the maple leaf. It appeared on the different versions of the Canadian Red Ensign, the national flag under which over 100,000 Canadians died in the defence of our freedoms.
“Since 1965, it has been the main feature of our national flag and remains a powerful symbol of our national pride.
“Our brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces wear it proudly as they stand on guard for our country. Our hard-working first responders and our Olympic and Paralympic athletes display it on their uniforms. It flies over schoolyards and in our backyards. It looks down on the nation’s capital from atop the Peace Tower. And we stitch it to backpacks when we travel abroad so everybody knows we come from the best country in the world.
“It stands for freedom, peace, justice, the rule of law, and hope for a better future. It is because of these Canadian values that our flag is recognized and revered around the world.
“So today, let us all reflect upon what Canada’s maple leaf means to us and honour the great Canadians who shaped our nation and those who fought to protect it.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, happy National Flag Day, Canada!”
