Ottawa, ON – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement to mark Lunar New Year:

“Today, Canadians of Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese heritage will celebrate the beginning of the Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday for many communities of Asian heritage across Canada.

“Families and friends from near and far will get together to welcome the New Year. It is known to the Chinese as New Year, while Koreans celebrate Seollal, and the Vietnamese call it Tet.

“As we say goodbye and thank you to the Year of the Dog, we welcome the Year of the Pig – which represents hard work, optimism, reliability and friendship.

“Our Conservative team will be attending multiple celebrations throughout the country to share this occasion with friends in the communities.

“I encourage all Canadians to learn more about this holiday, and join the many celebrations planned in communities across the country.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I offer my best wishes to all those celebrating the Lunar New Year! I hope the Year of the Pig will be filled with joy, peace and prosperity for all.”

Happy New Year!
