Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Mike Lake, Conservative Shadow Minister for Mental Health, Addictions, and Suicide Prevention, Todd Doherty, Member of Parliament for Cariboo—Prince George, and Luc Berthold, Conservative Shadow Minister for Health, issued the following statement calling on the Liberal government to follow through on a national 3-digit suicide prevention hotline in Canada:

“One year ago today, all parliamentarians voted in favour of a motion brought forward by Conservative MP Todd Doherty to create a national 3-digit suicide prevention hotline in Canada.

“Canadians were inspired to see parliamentarians come together and unanimously support this life-saving initiative to ensure Canadians struggling with their mental health will have someone to call in their darkest hour.

“365 days later, the Liberal government has still not implemented this hotline. The longer this is delayed, the more lives will tragically be lost to suicide in Canada.

“Canada’s Conservatives are calling on the Liberal government to step up and commit to an implementation date and clear funding for a national 3-digit suicide prevention hotline in Canada.

“Canadians struggling with their mental health are being left behind by this Liberal government. Canada’s Conservatives know that mental health is health, and we will treat it with the urgency and compassion it deserves.”
