Ottawa, ON — Ed Fast, Member of Parliament for Abbotsford, Brad Vis, Member of Parliament for Mission—Matsqui—Fraser Canyon, Mark Strahl, Member of Parliament for Chilliwack—Hope, and Dan Albas, Member of Parliament for Central Okanagan—Similkameen—Nicola, issued the following statement calling on the government to match donations to additional charitable groups supporting the BC floods:
“Canada’s Conservatives will continue to take a Team Canada approach and work with the government to ensure the people of British Columbia are safe and have the resources needed to support them through this very difficult time.
“Recently, we asked the Liberal government if they will match donations made to the registered charitable groups with boots on the ground who are raising money and committing time and effort to the people of British Columbia affected by the floods. While we are thankful the government made the commitment to match all donations made to the Canadian Red Cross, it did not include the many additional charities contributing to the effort.
“Since the unprecedented flooding began in British Columbia, Canadians have stepped up to help in a big way. People have come forward to help the evacuation efforts, sandbag, move livestock, and provide food and shelter. And Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast have opened their wallets to give generously to charities helping those who have been displaced and cut off from the rest of the country.
“Canada’s Conservatives are calling on the Liberal government to match donations made to the multiple registered charitable groups and organizations raising money and doing good work on the ground in British Columbia. The Canadian Red Cross continues to be an important contributor and we thank them for being there for the people of British Columbia. But we know it is “all hands on deck” and no single group can do it alone or be everywhere at once. More is needed.
“Our priority is the well-being and safety of the people of British Columbia. Canada’s Conservatives will continue to take a Team Canada approach to offer solutions and support for the people of British Columbia.”
