OTTAWA – Official Opposition Foreign Affairs critic, Tony Clement, offered congratulations on behalf of the Conservative caucus to Dr. Tsai Ing-wen, who was elected the first female president of Taiwan this week. He issued the following statement: “It is encouraging to see a transparent election being carried out, and the will of the Taiwanese people being recognized. While there are no formal diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Canada, we nevertheless have developed a respectful and gainful relationship, including as a key trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region. Culturally, Canada has also been the beneficiary of this relationship. There are currently more than 200,000 people of Taiwanese descent living in Canada, with an estimated 50,000 Canadians living in Taiwan. The new president certainly faces many challenges, but this election confirms the democratic spirit is alive and well in Taiwan.”
