February 27, 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on the rising tensions in the Kashmir region:
“Canada’s Conservatives strongly condemn the recent attack on Indian forces in Kashmir by the terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed. We also continue to call on the Government of Pakistan to live up to its commitments to root out terrorism in all of its forms. There should be no safe haven for terrorists.
“Conservatives will continue to support the actions taken by our security partners to combat terrorism in the region. Canada and India share historic ties and a well-established security partnership with a specific focus on counter-terrorism. We recognize the right of all sovereign nations to practice self-defence and the protection of their citizens, especially against acts of terrorism.
“We are hopeful that India and Pakistan will be able to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and re-commit to a peaceful dialogue on Kashmir. We also remain optimistic that both nations will take actions that will continue to foster stability in the region and promote positive relations.”
