Deepak was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 1997. He was then re-elected in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2015, successively receiving a larger percentage of the popular vote.
Deepak was born in Tanzania and attended school in three separate continents: in Tanzania, India and the United Kingdom. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1977. In January 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Deepak as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, a position which he held until the change of government in 2015, thus becoming Canada’s longest serving PS for Foreign Affairs. In March 2008 he was also appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation, and in September 2013 he was given the additional responsibility of International Human Rights.
In September 2013, Deepak was appointed to Her Majesty’s Privy Council for Canada, in recognition of his many years of public service as a Member of Parliament and in promoting the Government’s foreign affairs agenda internationally as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
After the 2015 federal election, by virtue of being the longest sitting Member of the Conservative Caucus, Deepak earned the position of Dean of Caucus, thus chairing the election of the Hon. Rona Ambrose as Interim Leader of Official Opposition.
Between 2016 and 2017, Deepak ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
He remains humbled by the continued support he has received from his constituents in Calgary Forest Lawn.
