OTTAWA – This week the Liberals tabled Budget 2017, which failed to deliver for our Canadian Armed Forces. In response, James Bezan, Official Opposition Critic for National Defence, and Associate Critic, Pierre Paul-Hus, issued the following statement: “National defence is clearly not a priority for this Liberal government. For the second year in a row, the budget contained nothing for our men and women in uniform. Instead the Liberals cut $8.48 billion which had been earmarked for military equipment purchases. Coupled with last year’s cuts, the Department of National Defence now faces a $12 billion shortfall. “In an era of reckless Liberal spending, it is appalling that the largest cuts are consistently at the expense of the Canadian Armed Forces. This raises the question of whether or not the Trudeau Liberals believe that Canada needs the ability to defend itself and our allies. Recent examples, including the Liberals’ decision to pull our CF-18s out of the fight against ISIS, their preference for fourth generation fighter jets, their lack of increased support for our Ukrainian allies, and their failure to advance important procurement projects, all suggest that the current Prime Minister has a Chretien-esque view of our military and expects other countries to do the heavy lifting. “While Canada’s allies have committed to modernizing their military capabilities and spending two percent of their GDP on defence, Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberals are being dangerously naïve. Despite the clear need for investments in Canada’s national defence, the Finance Minister stated this week that the government believes the military is ‘appropriately provisioned.’ “Now we know why the Liberals have repeatedly delayed releasing their Defence Policy Review. Instead of ensuring that our men and women in uniform have the best equipment, training, and support available, it’s looking more and more likely that Canada’s military will be scaled back and asked to do more with less. “This is absolutely unacceptable. Conservatives will continue to fight for the resources that our Canadian Armed Forces deserve.” -30- For more information: Office of James Bezan, MP Phone: 613-992-2032 [email protected] Office of Pierre Paul-Hus, MP Phone: 613-222-5613 [email protected]
