Ottawa, ON – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement to mark Ash Wednesday:

“Millions of Christians here at home and around the world will gather today on Ash Wednesday, a day of prayer, fasting, and repentance, to begin the penitential season of Lent. During today’s special prayer services, ashes are placed on people’s heads as a reminder of one’s mortality and the need to seek forgiveness.

“Culminating with Good Friday and Easter Sunday, Lent is a time during which Christians seek to reflect on and renew their spiritual lives. Following Jesus’s example, it is a way to mark the forty days and nights that he spent alone in the desert in fasting and prayer, and a time when we can rededicate ourselves to God and to one another.

“Canadians know how fortunate we are to live in this remarkable country. However, we also know that far too many of our neighbours are struggling. On Ash Wednesday and during Lent, please join me in reaching out to the people in our communities who need our assistance and prayers. Let us also pray for and continue to work on behalf of all of those who continue to suffer around the world, including those who are subjected to unspeakable violence and persecution simply for practicing their faith.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, please accept my best hopes and wishes for a blessed Ash Wednesday.”
