The Honourable Edward Fast

Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway

Ed grew up in Vancouver and went on to graduate from law school at the University of British Columbia. Afterward, he started his own law firm, which is now known as Linley Welwood.

Ed was elected to the Abbotsford School Board and served two terms. By 1996, he was elected to Abbotsford City Council where he served for nine years. During that time, many council appointments and volunteer activities kept him busy helping the community.

First elected to the House of Commons in 2006, Ed was re-elected in 2008. Most recently, he served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

Ed has achieved many personal accomplishments during his time in Ottawa. He is one of only a handful of members of Parliament who have had a private members’ bill passed into law. His Bill, C-277, increased from 5 to 10 years the maximum prison sentence for those who lure children over the internet for sexual purposes. Ed has also been successful in securing federal funding for the McCallum & Clearbrook Rd. interchanges, the Abbotsford Airport expansion, the Mill Lake Spray Park, the Mission Bridge and the Discovery and Matsqui Trails.

Ed and his wife, Annette, have lived in Abbotsford for almost 30 years. They have four daughters and one son-in-law. In their free time, they enjoy hiking, skiing and performing music.
