NDP Out of Touch on Human Smuggling
June 17, 2011
Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to take fair, reasonable and tough action to prevent the abuse of Canada’s immigration system by human smugglers. And yesterday, our Government reintroduced Preventing Human Smugglers from Abusing Canada's Immigration System Act to fulfill that promise. While our government is moving forward on the commitments we made to Canadians, the NDP continues to demonstrate that they are out of touch on key issues, like a balanced immigration system and the security of Canadians. Yesterday on Power and Politics, New Democrat Critic for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Don Davies, said that human smuggling is a “relatively small problem”. Canadians and legitimate refugees know that the abuse of our refugee system is not a small problem and we agree. Our Government has been clear: Canada opens its doors to those who work hard and play by the rules -- including all legitimate refugees. However we must crack down on those who seek to take advantage of our generosity and abuse our fair and welcoming immigration system for financial gain.
