NDP Forced to Pay Back Hundreds of Thousands in Illegal Donations

August 26, 2012

The Toronto Star is reporting that, following a Conservative complaint, the NDP has repaid $344,468 in corporate and union donations which were collected as “sponsorship” money. The story can be read here.

After being elected, our government took big money out of politics by banning corporate and union donations.

Unfortunately, it’s now become clear that, while the Conservative Party was building a grassroots network of individual supporters making small donations, the NDP went cap-in-hand to its big union boss friends in order to seek out “sponsorship” money

The big unions who participated in this scheme include the United Steelworkers, the Canadian Labour Congress, the United Food and Commercial Workers, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Canadian Machinists Political League, the International Association of Firefighters, the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada. This last union represents many members of the media.

What kind of influence does $344,468 buy you in the NDP? Thomas Mulcair must immediately disclose all meetings he and his staff had with representatives of these big unions in the wake of these illegal donations.

Had the Conservative Party not alerted Elections Canada to these illegal donations, the NDP would have continued giving big unions bosses and corporations a “sponsorship” loophole to avoid the law’s ban on big money in politics.

We will continue to defend political party finance laws against those Oppositions parties which seek to evade them or weaken them.

For example, the NDP’s 2012 leadership convention guide, Moving Forward, contained several “sponsorship” advertisements. We have asked Elections Canada why the NDP have not yet paid back the money for these donations.

Last week’s CRTC ruling on the illegal Liberal robocalls in Guelph, and today’s reports of illegal NDP big union and corporate “sponsorship” schemes are a powerful reminder that Conservatives must remain vigilant in defending the integrity of our electoral system from the tricks and schemes of the Opposition.
