Lack of oversight causing Canadian aid to potentially go to enemy combatants deeply concerning: Obhrai

February 12, 2016

Calgary – Conservative Party International Development Critic Deepak Obhrai expressed his deep concern over comments made by International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau that Canadian aid could help ISIS militants.

The Minister of International Development Marie-Claude Bibeau acknowledged that aid provided by Government of Canada to the conflict in Syria could provide health and food services to Islamic State fighters.

“Canadians should be extremely concerned by the comments made by the Minister that there will be no oversight on the part of the Government to ensure Canada’s aid dollars don’t go to enemy combatants, “ said Obhrai. “These are the most heinous criminals and terrorists in the world and the complete carelessness showed by the Minister is shameful. The fact that Canadian dollars could be directly or indirectly helping ISIS combatants is something that needs to addressed immediately.”

Conservatives have always supported the principles of neutrality and humanity in the provision of humanitarian aid. “We support the great work of NGOs on the ground, but let’s do our due diligence and ensure that their assistance is helping the most vulnerable – the victims of this crisis.”
