Keeping our Streets and Communities Safe | Conservative Party of Canada

Our Conservative Government continues to make the safety of Canadian families a top priority.

Our Conservative Government continues to put victims first by:

  • proposing to enshrine victims’ rights in an integrated law at the federal level
  • renewing funding for the Federal Victims Strategy
  • helping make sure victims are heard, through the federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime
  • consulting victims of crime on procedures and services for victims
  • enacting measures to help ensure victims’ time is not wasted by offenders canceling parole hearings at the last minute
  • increasing the financial restitution offenders are required to make to victims

We are holding offenders accountable by:

  • proposing measures to help crack down on child sexual predators, including:
    • establishing a publicly accessible national database of high-risk child sex offenders
    • creating new requirements for offenders who travel outside of Canada
    • enhancing information-sharing between police and border security
    • passing the Combating Terrorism Actto give law enforcement officials better tools to fight terrorism and prevent terrorist attacks on Canadian soil
      • passing the Citizen’s Arrest and Self-Defense Act to help ensure the justice system works with law-abiding Canadians, not against them, by clarifying the citizen’s arrest law to allow a person to make an arrest if someone is committing a property-related crime and the police are not present
      • amending legislation concerning persons found Not Criminally Responsible on Account of Mental Disorder (NCR) to make public safety the paramount consideration when decisions are made regarding these persons, and enable the courts to impose restrictions on ‘high-risk’ offenders to better protect victims and the public
      • passing the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act to make it easier to remove dangerous foreign criminals from our streets and harder for them to enter into Canada in the first place
      • cracking down on violence against women and girls by:
        • increasing the age of protection to better protect 14 and 15-year olds from adult sexual predators
        • eliminating the option of house arrest for those who have committed sexual assault
        • toughening penalties for the trafficking of date rape drugs
        • passing legislation to help better protect women living on reserves

Canadians can count on our Conservative Government to help keep our streets and communities safe.
