MP Niki Ashton: Vote to scrap the long-gun registry
October 26, 2009

New ad campaign encourages voters to let their MP know their views

Conservative Member of Parliament Candice Hoeppner (Portage-Lisgar) called on NDP Member of Parliament Niki Ashton (Churchill) to support her Private Members’ Bill C-391, which would end the wasteful, costly and ineffective long-gun registry.

“My Private Members' Bill C-391 would finally bring an end to the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry,” said Mrs. Hoeppner.  “We're running this campaign because there are some MPs in Ottawa who say they support scrapping the long-gun registry at home, but support keeping it in Ottawa.”

Earlier today, the Conservative Party launched a special local radio ad calling on Ms. Ashton to vote to scrap the long-gun registry.  The ad notifies residents of Churchill that a second reading vote to scrap the long-gun registry will take place on November 4, 2009.   It will be a close vote.  Residents are encouraged to call Ms. Ashton’s constituency office at 204-677-1333 to make their views known.

At the root of the problem is the fact that Niki Ashton has thus far been unwilling to stand up to her political boss in Ottawa, Jack Layton.  This is the same Jack Layton who simply answered “Yes” when asked if he would vote to keep the long-gun registry (http://www.premierministre.gouv.qc.ca/layton-2008-en.pdf).

Particularly disappointing for law-abiding hunters and farmers in Churchill, Ms. Ashton has not been clear with her constituents on the gun registry.  The Winnipeg Free Press reported that:

“Newly-elected Churchill NDP MP Niki Ashton would not answer the question on the [long-gun registry] and noted that economic issues were her top priority.” (Winnipeg Free Press, February 7, 2009)

It is time for Niki Ashton to do the right thing, listen to her constituents and vote for Bill C-391.  The ad is available to be listened to immediately at http://www.conservative.ca/C-391.

Mrs. Hoeppner concluded by asking Niki Ashton to make her voting intentions on Bill C-391 known at the earliest opportunity and to vote against the registry on November 4.
