Helena Guergis was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and re-elected in 2006 and 2008. In January 2007, she was named Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport).
Ms. Guergis previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade. She also served on the Parliamentary standing committees on Citizenship and Immigration, as well as Foreign Affairs and International Trade,.and the subcommittees on Human Rights and International Development and on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment. In the most recent Parliament she served on the Standing Committee on the Status of Women.
Prior to her election, Ms. Guergis owned a small business.
She has volunteered with the Barrie Rape Crisis Centre and has contributed to fundraising efforts for a local food bank for several years. She has also been a literacy tutor for seniors.
Ms. Guergis is married to Rahim Jaffer.
