| Replacing Liberal Talk with Real Action on Climate Change
March 08, 2007
National carbon capture system will reduce greenhouse gas emissions When it comes to the environment, Canadians want action, not just talk. Today Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach announced the formation of a task force to drive implementation of a carbon dioxide capture and storage system for Canada. The Canada-Alberta ecoENERGY Carbon Capture and Storage Task Force will develop a comprehensive blueprint for using cutting edge, made-in-Canada technology to capture carbon dioxide—produced by oil sands operations, coal-fired power plants, and other industries— and store it deep underground before the greenhouse gas is released into the atmosphere. Canada’s New Government is replacing Liberal talk with tangible and practical actions to address climate change and reduce air pollution. Compare Conservative action to Liberal talk. Former Liberal Environment Minister Christine Stewart says Liberal leader Stéphane Dion was never a champion of Kyoto during her time in the portfolio. (Northumberland Today, March 7, 2007) Another former Liberal Environment Minister, David Anderson, confirmed that Dion was more concerned about appeasing provinces that were strongly opposed to Kyoto’s greenhouse gas targets. (CTV.ca, Ex-Minister provides background on Dion, Kyoto, Feb. 4, 2007). Former senior policy advisor Eddie Goldenberg has also revealed the Liberal government went ahead with Kyoto even though they had no plan or the political will to meet the Kyoto emissions targets. (Toronto Star, February 23, 2007) Canadians have a choice between a Liberal leader who didn’t get it done on the environment and a Conservative Prime Minister who is taking real action to clean up Canada’s air land and water. |
