Prime Minister teams up with Gates Foundation in search of HIV/AIDS Vaccine

Prime Minister Stephen Harper teamed up with Bill and Melinda Gates to announce the establishment of the Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative.

Prime Minister Harper said HIV/AIDS is a killer that must be stopped and that, while it is one of the greatest scientific challenges of our time, Canada is up to the task.

Canada’s New Government will commit up to $111 million to the Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative while the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will provide up to $28 million.

The initiative is an historic step forward in the fight against HIV/AIDS that will support Canadian researchers and institutions on a range of HIV vaccine activities, including:

  • Discovering new vaccine candidates;
  • Strengthening clinical trials capacity;
  • Manufacturing promising vaccine candidates for trials; and
  • Addressing policy, regulatory, and social issues related to HIV vaccine development.

Today’s announcement complements existing funding from Canada’s New Government for the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and the African AIDS Vaccine Programme.

With 40 million people currently infected and 25 million people dead, HIV/AIDS is one of the most heart-wrenching health crises the world has ever seen.

Canada’s New Government is proud to be working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to find a vaccine for HIV/AIDS that will eventually save millions of lives around the world.
