PM commences Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation meetings

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today continued his series of meetings with the leaders of the 21 countries that form the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). APEC Leaders will work to boost regional trade and investment, strengthen economic and technical cooperation, and promote a secure and favourable business environment.

The Asia-Pacific region is important to Canada. The APEC economies represent about one-third of the world's population, 60 per cent of GDP and 47 per cent of worldwide trade.

Since taking office, Canada’s New Government has made substantial investments in the Asia-Pacific Gateway in order to boost the volume of trade reaching Canadian shores, including:

  • $321 million for variety of infrastructure, transportation technology and border security projects in Western Canada; and
  • $270 million for other initiatives involved with the long-term strategy for the Gateway.

These investments are expected to boost container traffic by 7 million units annually by 2020.

Canada’s New Government is committed to getting things done for Canada and is standing up for Canadian values on the world stage.
