Four years of Conservative action for Canada
January 22, 2010

This Saturday marks the four year anniversary of the Conservative Party win in the 2006 general election. Since that victory, our Conservative Government has delivered real results that have made a difference in the lives of Canadians and their families.

For the past four years, we have delivered significant tax relief for families and businesses. We lowered the GST from 7% to 6% to 5% to put more money back into Canadians’ pockets. We cut income taxes at all levels to help working families save on their tax bill. Seniors in Canada are enjoying lower taxes as a result of our introduction of pension income splitting and our increases to the Age Credit Amount. We have also lowered our corporate and small business tax rates to make Canada a more attractive place to do business. Our Government’s action is keeping taxes low for all Canadians.

In addition to providing tax relief, our Conservative Government has delivered other strong initiatives that have made a difference. We created the popular Home Renovation Tax Credit, where families can renovate and upgrade their homes and save on their 2009 tax return. We introduced the Universal Child Care Benefit to give parents choice in childcare; because when it comes to our kids, parents know best. We also introduced special tax credits for children’s fitness programs and public transit passes. Furthermore, we are working to make families safer and healthier by taking action to ban the potentially toxic substance Bisphenol-A in baby bottles, and by introducing tough new product safety legislation. Your families’ well-being is as important to our Government as it is to you.

Since 2006, our Conservative Government has also worked for the safety and security of all Canadians in communities from coast to coast to coast. To get dangerous criminals off the streets and to help protect families, we passed the Tackling Violent Crime Act. This important legislation increased the age of protection from 14 to 16, while also giving police and judges the tools they need to crack down on drunk and stoned drivers. We also passed laws that prevent dangerous criminals from serving their sentences from the comfort of their own home – to make sure they pay their debt to society. In addition, we have worked extensively to end the wasteful long-gun registry that targets honest farmers and hunters rather than dangerous criminals.

As much of our action has a direct effect on families, our Conservative Government also began to make politics, in general, more accountable to Canadians. We banned both corporations and unions from making political donations to ensure politicians were not influenced by large contributions. We also reduced the amount of money that individuals can donate per year. We created strict new rules for lobbyists, and have taken action to make the Senate more accountable to Canadians as well. To do this, we appointed Canada’s first elected Senator, Bert Brown of Alberta; and, every new Senator we have appointed is committed to reforming the Senate.

Finally, in addition to all this work for Canada and Canadians at home, we have also delivered strong results in improving our national security and our country’s place on the world stage. We delivered rapid response that is helping the people of Haiti in their time of need. For our security at home, we increased the presence of Canadian Rangers in the Arctic while also designating areas of our precious land for protection. We also invested in our Canadian Forces by providing better insurance and increasing support for those who experience illness or injury in the line of duty. We are beefing up airport security for the safety of all travellers in Canada by installing new security scanners. And, we are cracking down on global terrorism – even allowing victims to seek restitution from those individuals responsible for committing or supporting terrorism. Our work in Afghanistan is resulting in a better life for the Afghan people; and recently, we signed the Copenhagen Accord, an agreement among developed and developing nations including China and the United States, to reduce the worldwide level of greenhouse gases.

Four years ago, our Conservative Government was elected to bring change and strong action to Canada. We’ve had many obstacles – the worst economic recession since World War Two being one of them. Our Economic Action Plan delivered the right stimulus to help families, seniors and businesses through the difficult times. But make no mistake, there is much left to do. Our Conservative Government will stay the course in delivering Canada’s Economic Action Plan, to bring our economy out of the recession stronger than it entered into it. After four years, we are proud to be able to say Canada is safer, more secure, and better off for Canadians and their families.
