Born and raised in Edmonton, James studied political science and economics at the University of Ottawa before obtaining his degree at the University of Alberta in 1995.
He worked as the executive assistant to MP Ian McClelland, and as a senior researcher for an Edmonton-based public relations firm.
First elected to the House of Commons in 2000, he has been re-elected since. As a Parliamentarian, James has been a strong advocate for Canadian economic competitiveness. In opposition, he served as Industry Critic, and in 2006, he became chair of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology. James has volunteered in the community for many years, most notably as a power skating instructor and hockey coach. Passionate about public policy, James is currently pursuing a Master's in Canadian politics and political theory from the University of Alberta.
James' interests include classical music, philosophy and literature.
