Helping Keep our Streets Safe

November 21, 2012

On Tuesday, Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the coming into force of the Harper Government’s new law eliminating house arrest for serious and violent criminals.

Through this final component of the Safe Streets and Communities Act, we are helping ensure that the perpetrators of these serious crimes serve their time not in the comfort of their homes, but in prison where they belong.

This new law expands the list of offences that are ineligible for house arrest to include serious crimes such as: criminal harassment, sexual assault, kidnapping, abduction of persons less than 14 years of age, theft over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering, and arson for fraudulent purposes.

By holding serious and violent offenders accountable, our Government is putting the rights of victims first and helping keep our streets and communities safe.
