Helping Protect Children from Dangerous Predators
August 09, 2012
On Thursday, the Harper Government announced that a key component of our Safe Streets and Communities Act – the law that works to protect children from sexual predators – has now come into force.
The sexual exploitation of children is a heinous crime that causes irreparable harm to vulnerable members of society. Through the Safe Streets and Communities Act, our Government has taken tough action against child exploitation in all forms by toughening penalties related to these crimes.
The legislation that came into force on Thursday establishes mandatory prison sentences for seven existing offences such as luring a child, sexual assault and aggravated assault. It also increases mandatory sentences for nine offences involving child victims such as possessing, making or distributing child pornography.
The Harper Government remains committed to helping keep our streets and communities safe, while holding offenders accountable for their actions.
